Potential Regulatory Shifts Threaten $TSLA Regulatory Credit Revenue and Core Profitability

Washington has reportedly reduced the 2031 fuel economy mandate by a third, dropping the requirement from 50.4 mpg to 34.9 mpg, while also planning to eliminate the compliance credit market by 2028.
Last year, $TSLA generated $2.76 billion from the sale of regulatory credits, representing pure margin for the company. Analysts note that stripping away this revenue stream leaves the core automotive business operating at a loss.
Without forced buyers in the regulatory credit market, this revenue stream is expected to disappear entirely by 2027.
