US Goods Trade Deficit Widens to $132.6B in August
The U.S. goods trade deficit widened by $13.7B, or 11.5%, in August to $132.6B, its largest gap since March 2025.
Goods imports surged 5.5% to $336.1B, also the highest since March 2025, driven partly by a 16.6% increase in industrial supplies including petroleum products. Imports of capital goods such as computers, semiconductors and telecommunications equipment also increased amid continued demand for AI-related equipment.
Goods exports rose 1.9% to $203.4B, supported by larger shipments of industrial supplies.
The widening deficit comes alongside increased demand for petroleum products and efforts by U.S. companies to stockpile goods and materials amid supply-chain disruption concerns.
