Solidus Labs Flags Over $170M in Suspicious Brent Crude Oil Perpetual Orders on Hyperliquid ($HYPE) Amid...
Market surveillance firm Solidus Labs has flagged more than $170 million in anomalous energy-linked perpetual futures orders on decentralized exchange Hyperliquid ($HYPE) during March’s heightened crude oil volatility, raising concerns over on-chain order-book spoofing.
Key forensic findings, execution mechanics, and regulatory implications include:
- Coordinated Order-Book Manipulation Pattern: Between March 8 and March 10, 2026—a three-day window of severe oil price swings—Solidus Labs identified two accounts repeatedly placing massive orders on one side of the order book and rapidly canceling them while executing real trades on the opposite side. While Brent crude perpetuals accounted for the bulk of the $170 million+ in flagged volume, WTI crude and natural gas contracts were also involved.
- High-Velocity Spoofing Example and Profits: In one highlighted sequence, the trader rapidly canceled approximately $17 million in sell orders while simultaneously executing roughly $425,000 in buy orders, triggering noticeable price swings in Hyperliquid’s Brent Crude perpetual contract before and after the cancellations. Across the three-day period, the trader reportedly extracted approximately $119,000 in profits.
- On-Chain Transparency vs. RWA Derivatives Scrutiny: Responding to the findings, Hyperliquid Labs pointed to the public, verifiable nature of its on-chain order book records. However, the report underscores growing institutional and regulatory scrutiny over 24/7 decentralized commodity and real-world asset (RWA) perpetual markets (such as HIP-3 builder deployments), where thinner liquidity during off-hours can amplify order-book manipulation risks.
