Google Sets November 17 Migration Deadline to Transition Gemini Gems into Interactive Skills
Google has announced a major update to its Gemini AI ecosystem, setting a November 17, 2026 deadline to automatically migrate existing custom "Gems" into a new feature called "skills."
Introduced in 2024, Gems allowed Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers to save custom instructions, reference files, and default tools for recurring workflows. The new skills feature shifts how users access these configurations by allowing them to type a slash (/) directly in the prompt box, enabling multiple custom instructions to run simultaneously within a single session.
While the new inline functionality offers greater multitasking flexibility, questions remain regarding how existing file attachments, default tool assignments, and shareable links will transition when the automatic migration takes effect.
