Tesla to Wind Down Cybertruck Production in Mid-2027 to Expand Cybercab Output
Tesla $TSLA plans to wind down Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around mid-2027 to make room for increased Cybercab manufacturing, CEO Elon Musk said.
The decision follows disappointing demand for the electric pickup, which has struggled to approach Tesla's original sales ambitions since deliveries began in 2023. Musk did not specify whether Cybertruck production would move to another factory or end entirely.
The shift reinforces Tesla's growing emphasis on autonomous transportation. Unlike conventional vehicle sales, a commercial robotaxi network could generate recurring revenue from rides, although its financial potential will depend on utilization, operating costs and regulatory approvals.
Cybercab is becoming central to Tesla's longer-term strategy as the company redirects manufacturing capacity toward autonomous vehicles.
