U.S. Debt Surpasses $40.6 Trillion as Elon Musk Says AI and Robots Are the Only Solution

U.S. national debt has climbed above $40.6 trillion, renewing concerns about the country's long-term fiscal outlook. Elon Musk has argued that traditional spending cuts will not be enough to solve the problem, suggesting that artificial intelligence and robotics could be the only way to address the growing debt burden.
Speaking on the Dwarkesh Podcast in February, Musk warned that the U.S. would face national bankruptcy without AI and robots, saying that nothing else could solve the debt problem. He repeated the argument in an October interview with biographer Walter Isaacson, adding that the government could not simply save its way out of the crisis.
According to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation's debt clock, the national debt represents approximately $118,939 per American. Interest expenses alone exceed $2.8 billion per day, with the foundation projecting that costs could nearly double within a decade.
Musk previously led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cost-cutting effort for roughly four months in 2025. He has since acknowledged that he became carried away during his time in Washington and argued that spending reductions alone cannot resolve the debt.
**Musk's Bitcoin exposure**
Musk's companies also hold substantial Bitcoin positions. As of the Oct. 31 closing price of $77,424:
- SpaceX held 18,712 BTC, valued at approximately $1.45 billion.
- Tesla held 11,509 BTC, valued at approximately $891 million.
- Combined holdings totaled 30,221 BTC, worth around $2.34 billion.
SpaceX reportedly acquired its Bitcoin at an average cost of roughly $35,000 per coin, giving its current position a value more than twice its purchase cost.
**Why Bitcoin supporters are watching**
Bitcoin's fixed supply of 21 million coins has made it attractive to investors concerned about government borrowing, currency debasement, and excessive money creation. Musk has previously argued that Bitcoin is tied to energy and cannot be created as easily as fiat currency.
However, his proposed solution to the debt problem relies on AI-driven productivity rather than Bitcoin or other hard assets.
Musk has also suggested that widespread automation could eventually require governments to distribute money to people as robots take over more work. He describes the potential result as massive disinflation, although the implications of such a policy remain uncertain.
Whether AI and robotics can generate enough economic growth and productivity to address a national debt exceeding $40 trillion remains an open question.
