AI Overcapacity Warning: 79% of Companies Report GPU Utilization at 50% or Less

Concerns about excess AI computing capacity are growing after a survey cited by VentureBeat found that 79% of participating companies utilize their GPUs at 50% capacity or less.
Despite relatively low utilization, 70% of respondents reportedly plan to adopt new AI computing platforms. Among companies planning these investments, 91% lack return-on-investment estimates reviewed by their finance teams.
The findings raise questions about whether enterprise AI infrastructure spending is expanding faster than actual computing demand.
However, the survey does not establish that the entire AI industry faces overcapacity. Sample composition, workload patterns and the distinction between reserved and actively used capacity are important when interpreting the results.
