Morgan Stanley Names $CVNA Top Winner as AI Agents Disrupt Auto Retail

Autonomous artificial intelligence shopping agents could transform auto buying from a showroom-centric process into an "offer wins" market, with $CVNA positioned as the primary beneficiary, according to Morgan Stanley.
Analysts Daniela Haigian and Andrew Percoco argue that AI agents—such as Meta's recently launched Muse—will neutralize polished marketing and dealer haggling by evaluating all-in pricing, hidden fees, financing, and trade-in values simultaneously. This transition shifts competitive advantages toward end-to-end logistics and fulfillment infrastructure over traditional physical showrooms.
Morgan Stanley estimates $CVNA holds a significant unit-economics edge, projecting it will generate $740 more in gross profit per vehicle in 2026 than $KMX and roughly $1,100 more than traditional franchise dealers. This cushion allows the online retailer to offer more aggressive pricing to win algorithm-driven vehicle comparisons. The firm reiterated an Overweight rating on $CVNA with a $90 price target.
Conversely, traditional franchise dealership groups—including $ABG, $AN, $GPI, $LAD, $PAG, and $SAH—face heightened margin pressure as automated tools expose opaque fee structures, while $KMX remains a wild card ahead of its November 3 strategic update.
