Ikea to Close Four More Small-Format U.S. Stores in 2026 as It Reassesses Its Footprint
Ikea will permanently close four of its Plan & order point with Pick-up and small-format U.S. locations in the coming months, according to the company's website and TheStreet:
- Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: Oct. 18
- Annapolis, Maryland: Oct. 30
- San Marcos, Texas: Nov. 1
- Fairfax, Virginia: Nov. 30
All four opened in recent years. Ikea said the closures are part of its strategy to build a more affordable, accessible, and sustainable future, adding that it continues to test new ways for customers to meet Ikea while investing in home delivery, pick-up services, and its online experience.
The closures follow earlier shutdowns this year in South Charlotte, North Carolina, and Austin, Texas (both Aug. 30), Cordova, Tennessee (May 3, a large-format store), and Southlake, Texas (Feb. 1).
Ikea currently has 28 Plan & order point with Pick-up stores, 10 of which are shop-in-shops inside Best Buy locations. The company still plans to open 10 new U.S. stores in 2026, and in 2023 it confirmed plans to invest more than $2.2 billion in the U.S. over three years.
In fiscal 2025, Ikea's total revenue declined nearly 0.9% year over year and retail sales fell 1.1%, largely due to price reductions introduced in 2024. Sales volume rose 2.6% and store visits increased 1.9%. Physical stores accounted for about 69% of product sales, while 28% of purchases were made online.
