Iran Reportedly Threatens Undersea Internet Cables Near Strait of Hormuz
Iran has reportedly warned that seven major undersea telecommunications cables near the Strait of Hormuz could become targets amid escalating regional tensions.
Damage to critical subsea infrastructure could disrupt internet connectivity and affect banking transactions, cloud services, government communications and data center operations across parts of the Gulf.
The United Arab Emirates and Iraq could face particular exposure depending on which cables and network routes were affected.
Regional financial markets are already under pressure, with Saudi Arabia's TASI reportedly down approximately 13% over six months and Qatar's benchmark around 25% below its cycle highs.
However, the reported threat has not been independently verified, and no cable attack should be inferred. Actual disruption would depend on network redundancy and the location of any damage.
