Elon Musk Warns G20 of 15GW AI Power Shortfall by 2027 as Infrastructure Lags Chip Demand

Elon Musk warned G20 leaders that the artificial intelligence industry faces a severe near-term electricity crisis, citing consensus estimates of at least a 15-gigawatt power shortfall for AI chips by 2027.
According to Musk, AI chip production is surging at 40% to 50% annually, while power generation capacity outside of China is only expanding by 10% to 20% a year. This compounding gap makes electricity the primary bottleneck for technological growth.
To bypass traditional grid delays, companies like Alphabet ($GOOGL) and Anthropic have turned to leasing compute from SpaceX, which has accelerated capacity online by constructing its own dedicated power infrastructure.
Musk added that the impending scaling of $TSLA Optimus humanoid robots will eventually drive an even greater surge in structural power demand.
