Trump Urges Data Center Developers to Compensate Communities as AI Projects Face Resistance
President Donald Trump has reportedly suggested that data center developers offer local residents $10,000–$15,000 to help secure community support for new projects.
The Financial Times reportedly identified at least 47 major US data center projects delayed, blocked or withdrawn in 2026. Bernstein analysts also estimated that only 35% of planned projects were credible.
Electricity demand, infrastructure costs and local opposition have become significant challenges for AI expansion. Trump has also reportedly advocated greater responsibility for developers to supply electricity and return excess power to surrounding communities.
However, the proposed payments should not be interpreted as a legal requirement, and claims of a nationwide mandate for data centers to generate their own power require official confirmation.
