Cal Newport Calls for Stronger AI Liability Rules to Protect Children

Cal Newport is calling for stronger oversight of major AI companies as policymakers debate how to protect children from potential harms linked to generative AI.
Speaking with Ed Elson, Newport argued that Congress should conduct more testimony and investigation into companies including OpenAI and Anthropic.
He also said liability rules may need to be updated so AI developers can be held responsible when harmful outcomes were reasonably predictable consequences of their products.
In Newport’s view, liability could become one of the most effective mechanisms for discouraging dangerous product behavior.
The argument shifts part of the AI regulation debate away from prescribing exactly how models should be built and toward determining who bears responsibility when something goes wrong.
That could have significant implications for AI companies if future rules increase legal exposure tied to product design, safety controls and use by minors.
