Trump Warns of Depression if Democrats Win, Promises $5,000 Checks if GOP Prevails
President Trump is escalating his economic message ahead of the midterm elections.
Trump claimed that a Democratic victory would lead to a “1929-style economic depression,” framing the election as having major consequences for the U.S. economy.
He also renewed his pledge to provide $5,000 payments to American adults if Republicans retain control of Congress.
The proposed payments have not been enacted and would face significant legislative and funding hurdles.
Estimates suggest sending $5,000 to roughly 240 million U.S. adults could cost around $1.2 trillion.
Trump has argued that the U.S. can afford the payments, while economists and lawmakers have questioned how they would be financed and what they could mean for the federal deficit and inflation.
The depression warning is also a political prediction rather than an established economic forecast.
For markets, the bigger issue is whether election-driven fiscal proposals translate into additional government spending, borrowing and Treasury issuance at a time when long-term yields are already elevated.
