Elon Musk Says Neuralink Could Implant First Blindsight Devices Within 6–12 Months
Elon Musk says Neuralink could begin implanting its first experimental Blindsight vision devices within the next 6 to 12 months.
The system is designed to bypass damaged eyes and optic nerves by sending visual information directly to the brain’s visual cortex.
“We’re going to write directly to your visual cortex… and you’re going to see,” Musk said.
The long-term ambition is particularly aggressive.
Musk says the technology could eventually help people blind from birth gain some form of vision, while later versions could potentially move beyond normal human sight.
He has discussed future capabilities including higher-resolution vision and perception of infrared, ultraviolet and even radar-derived signals.
Those capabilities have not been demonstrated in humans and should be treated as long-term goals rather than established outcomes.
Blindsight has received FDA Breakthrough Device designation, which can accelerate development and regulatory review but does not represent approval for general use.
The immediate milestone is much narrower: demonstrating that direct stimulation of the visual cortex can produce useful and repeatable visual perception in human patients.
If successful, Blindsight could represent one of the most ambitious applications of brain-computer interfaces yet.
