Twenty-One Global Financial Institutions Form Coalition to Launch Regulated Stablecoin Venture in 2027
Twenty-one major international financial institutions have committed to establishing a joint enterprise to issue a regulated, reserve-backed digital currency. The initiative marks a major traditional finance (TradFi) push to challenge crypto-native stablecoin dominance.
Key details of the joint venture include:
- Launch Timeline: The group plans to form the official company in the second half of 2026, targeting a market debut for its flagship U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoin in the first half of 2027. Future expansion plans include issuing tokens in other G7 currencies, prioritizing the euro.
- Heavyweight Participants: The consortium spans North America, Europe, and Asia, featuring institutions such as Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Deutsche Bank, UBS, Santander, Fidelity Investments, and MUFG Bank.
- Strategic Focus & Compliance: The venture aims to provide institutional-grade governance, liquidity, and compliance for wholesale settlement and cross-border payments, built to align with regulatory frameworks like the U.S. GENIUS Act and Europe's MiCA regulation.
