Vitalik Buterin Warns AI Could Discover Hidden Flaws in Crypto Cryptography
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is warning that AI could expose weaknesses in cryptographic systems that humans have not yet discovered.
Buterin said the cryptography securing crypto may contain hidden flaws that researchers simply “haven't been smart enough” to find.
“But the bots can,” he said.
The concern is that increasingly capable AI systems could accelerate the search for vulnerabilities across cryptographic algorithms, implementations and security assumptions.
That could be beneficial when AI is used defensively to identify weaknesses before attackers exploit them.
But the same capability could also give attackers a much faster way to search for exploitable flaws.
The issue goes beyond $ETH and applies broadly across blockchains, wallets and other systems that depend on cryptography for security.
As AI capabilities improve, crypto security may increasingly become a race between AI-assisted defenders finding vulnerabilities first and AI-assisted attackers attempting to exploit them.
