Alexandr Wang Says $META Needed Leadership to Become “Much More AI-Pilled”
Alexandr Wang says Meta needed a major internal leadership shift to become much more aggressive about AI.
He described an early conversation in which one Meta leader argued that the company did not need a dedicated reasoning model and could continue relying on a more conventional model architecture.
Wang said the exchange gave him a “heart sinking moment” and briefly made him question whether he had joined the right company.
The concern was not simply about one model decision.
It reflected a broader gap between how quickly frontier AI was advancing and how aggressively parts of $META were responding to that change.
According to Wang, Mark Zuckerberg then pushed the company to become far more ambitious about the pace of AI development and where the technology was heading.
That shift helps explain Meta’s increasingly aggressive approach to models, compute infrastructure and AI talent.
For investors, the key issue is whether that cultural change can translate into faster product development and better returns on Meta’s massive AI spending.
The bigger takeaway is that catching the AI wave required more than capital.
It also required changing how quickly the organization was willing to rethink its assumptions.
