OpenAI Launches Dots, Always-On Background AI Agents Powered by GPT-6 Astra

OpenAI is rolling out Dots, a new class of agents powered by GPT-6 Astra designed to operate continuously in the background, even between conversations.
Each Dot operates with its own dedicated cloud computer and browser, connects to thousands of applications, maintains ongoing context, executes scheduled tasks, and compiles results for review. Users retain control by establishing rules that distinguish between automated actions and those requiring explicit approval.
According to OpenAI, Dots can handle research, review calendars, coordinate across connected apps, and advance projects independently without requiring a new prompt for every step.
The rollout begins for Pro users today, accompanied by support for Business Premium and an Enterprise beta. OpenAI stated that usage will be excluded from eligible plan allowances for the upcoming month.
Users start with a primary Dot, with longer-term plans focused on enabling individuals to deploy entire teams of agents.
