Nearly 70 Million Children Automatically Enrolled in 'Trump Accounts' Investment Program

Nearly 70 million American children under the age of 18 have been automatically enrolled in "Trump Accounts," a federal tax-advantaged investment initiative administered by the U.S. Treasury, the administration announced. President Donald Trump highlighted the milestone, stating that eligible beneficiaries could become "quite rich" by age 18 through long-term compounding in domestic equities.
Under the program, eligible newborns receive a $1,000 seed deposit directly from the U.S. Treasury, with family members, employers, and approved donors permitted to contribute up to $5,000 annually. Funds are invested into low-cost index funds and ETFs holding at least 90% U.S. equities, with parental custodianship remaining in place until the child reaches age 18, at which point the assets transition under Traditional IRA rules.
While automatic enrollment was implemented to ensure eligible accounts begin receiving philanthropic and state contributions immediately without prior parental setup, guardians must still verify identity and link accounts via the official portal to claim seed balances and manage recurring investments.
