Tom Lee Highlights Crypto and Agentic Payments as Primary Downstream Beneficiaries of AI Boom

Fundstrat Head of Research Tom Lee outlined a structural thesis positioning cryptocurrency as one of the largest downstream market opportunities emerging from the artificial intelligence boom. Lee argued that the AI megatrend extends well beyond upstream infrastructure, memory, and semiconductor bottlenecks. As primary chip and hardware stocks underwent periodic valuation consolidations, downstream sectors—including software, select mega-cap tech, and digital assets—have demonstrated relative outperformance.
Central to the thesis is the acceleration of autonomous AI agents requiring native transaction layers. Echoing views from venture capital firm a16z and co-founder Marc Andreessen, Lee highlighted agentic commerce as the critical intersection unifying AI and blockchain technology. Because software-driven agents operate without traditional bank accounts or legal personhood, permissionless blockchain rails, smart contracts, and stablecoins are positioned to serve as the default monetary architecture enabling autonomous systems to hold, transfer, and settle capital.
