Von der Leyen Calls for Europe’s Household Savings to Fund European Companies

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says Europe should channel more household savings toward investment in European companies.
Von der Leyen argued that too much private capital remains “lazy” rather than being deployed into productive investment across the region.
She said the EU should look at ways to securitize and better supervise those savings as part of a broader effort to strengthen European capital markets.
The goal is to mobilize more domestic capital for European businesses, infrastructure and strategic industries instead of relying heavily on foreign financing.
The remarks are already drawing scrutiny over how far Brussels should go in encouraging or directing private savings toward investment.
For European markets, the broader initiative could become significant if it succeeds in shifting more household wealth into equities, funds and other capital-market products.
