Tom Lee Says BitMine Will Stop Buying $ETH Once It Reaches 5% Supply Cap

Tom Lee says BitMine plans to stop accumulating $ETH once its holdings reach a 5% “hard cap.”
“We only need to get another 100,000 ETH to get to 5%,” Lee said on stage at Token2049.
According to Lee, the 5% threshold is designed to optimize shareholder value rather than maximize Ethereum ownership at any cost.
The announcement effectively puts a ceiling on one of the largest corporate $ETH accumulation strategies in the market.
Once the target is reached, BitMine would no longer represent the same source of incremental spot demand for Ethereum.
That makes the final 100,000 $ETH particularly important, as investors now have a clearer view of when the company’s accumulation phase could end.
The bigger question is what BitMine does with capital after reaching the cap, and whether staking, treasury management or other Ethereum-based strategies become the next source of shareholder returns.
